A taste of October in Peru
With its layers of anise-scented shortbread, rich chancaca cane sugar syrup, and colorful candy topping, turrón de Doña Pepa is one of Lima’s signature October sweets.
The dessert is closely associated with the Señor de los Milagros, or Lord of Miracles, whose annual celebrations mark Peru’s Mes Morado—Purple Month. Oral tradition credits Josefa Marmanillo, an enslaved Afro-Peruvian cook, with creating the dessert as an offering of gratitude after a healing she attributed to the Señor de los Milagros.
Today, turrón remains a beloved part of October, connecting generations through food, memory, and the joy of sharing.
